About Mr Nick Howells
Mr Nick Howells is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising exclusively in knee surgery.

Nick’s NHS practice is based at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre which is the regional specialist centre for complex knee problems.
Nick’s private practice is at Spire and Nuffield Hospitals in Bristol and at BMI Bath Clinic.

Nick will always put you and you circumstances at the centre of all aspects of your care. Nick will adopt a calm, reassuring and considered approach with a focus on timely and accurate diagnosis and discussion of treatment options.
Nick is able to assess, manage and treat patients with all types of knee problems. He has received extensive training in the latest surgical techniques having completed specialist fellowships in all aspects of knee surgery. His UK training has been in Bristol, London and Oxford with international training at world renowned centres in Australia and USA.

His practice involves surgery for all types of knee problem including ligament reconstruction, keyhole surgery, full and partial knee replacement.
Nick has a passion for treatment of complex sporting injuries, knee preservation surgery and revision/redo surgery.
He is an internationally acclaimed expert on assessment and management of patients with problems and pain after knee replacement surgery.
Nick regularly provides second opinions for patients with challenging problems and for people who need revision or reconstructive surgery.
During specialist training Nick took extra time out to focus on medical research relevant to knee surgery and was awarded a Medical Research Doctorate in Orthopaedic surgery by the University of Bristol, a Masters in Surgical Technology by Imperial College, London.
He continues to hold the active post of Honorary Lecturer with the University of Bristol and is currently involved in clinical research trials which have attracted several million pounds of National Institute for Health Research Funding.
Current areas of work focus on techniques for cartilage restoration in the knee, improving outcomes for patients with problems after knee replacement and treatment of meniscal injuries.

Nick’s has a keen interest in teaching and training and he was awarded the Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of his training in medical education. He lectures on a number of national and international courses, regularly teaches medical students, juniors doctors and trainee surgeons and has been lead for junior doctor training in Orthopaedics at North Bristol NHS Trust.

Nick lives with his wife and young family just outside Bristol and Bath. He previously played representative level Cricket, Hockey and Squash and is a Level II Canadian Qualified Ski Instructor. Now he enjoys Golf, Cycling and Skiing with his family
